The No-Poo Experiment is Over
Posted on | October 12, 2010 | 4 Comments
On January 27, 2010 I started an experiment: I decided to explore life without shampoo. I learned how to wash my hair with baking soda, and even suffered a setback due to an inconsiderate parent.
Anyhow, over these past few days I have came to a conclusion: I am tired of washing my hair with baking soda.
Minimalism and frugality are nice, but there is a line between what makes you happy and what makes you miserable, and I am coming dangerously close to crossing this line when it comes to the no-poo method. While it is fun to explore and experiment with new ways of cleaning and doing things, sometimes the newness wears off and it becomes a chore and a pain.
Frankly, I miss shampoo. I miss the smells, I miss the lather and by golly I don’t enjoy having to make sure I pack baking soda whenever I go anywhere to remain a “purist.”
That is NOT what my life is about!
Life is meant to be enjoyed, regardless of how large or small your paycheck. Experimenting with new things is fun, but if you want to go back to the old way of doing things it’s okay.
So from here on out the No-Poo experiment is officially over. I plan to use baking soda to wash my hair whenever I desire, but I also plan to use regular shampoo whenever I desire as well. And if I happen to be caught with just one or the other–no biggie.
Life should be fluid and enjoyable, not about painting yourself in a box for this or that.
I still recommend using baking soda to wash your hair; it gets your hair clean with a minimum of muss, fuss or extra chemicals. I’m just bored with it, and realised that I was limiting myself by continuing the experiment. Since I don’t believe in limiting myself, something had to change.
So now I get to move on and continue to be true to myself and the fluid life that I prefer, placing an end to an experiment that limited and bored me.
For those who are interested in my no-poo journey, use the search box on the sidebar (between the Facebook fans and the ebook listing) to search for “no-poo” or visit the tag cloud and click on no-poo there. You can also click here to go to the original blog I started exclusively for this experiment. I plan to leave that exclusive blog up at present, but all of the entries are archived here for posterity.
What have you decided to change in your life? Have you discovered something that limits you? I would love to hear your stories in the comments!

I’m in week 3 of using just baking soda for shampooing. Because of my health my hair wants to fall out, and I was wondering if baking soda would be a little gentler. It is gentler and improves the texture of my thinning head of hair. And it is cheap as dirt, as it were!

It is definitely gentler and cheaper than shampoo, Meg! Overall I still prefer baking soda to shampoo, I just no longer wish to limit myself to baking soda exclusively.
Sometimes you paint yourself in a box, and I was ready to climb out!
My hair takes spells where it thins if I run out of hormones, so I feel you! Not sure if the baking soda will help that–keep me posted will you?
