Minimalism in Practice: Books

I love books. I regularly visit the library, read ebooks, and frequent used book sales. It is one of my biggest pleasures in life.

However I have no desire to keep a mountain of books that I never plan to read again so occasionally I purge my collection.

Here are the latest titles culled from my library:

The latest culls from my book collection.

I’m also working to get into the habit of culling digital titles that I never plan to read again, particularly the assortment of PDFs I tend to accumulate during my wanderings online. Unless I feel I may refer to it in the future or Katie may find it interesting these titles are being deleted.

The particular books in this photo will be donated to the library, to enter their stacks or be sold to generate income. I feel good knowing that my excess will help keep our local library alive.

Do you cull your book collection on occasion or do you simply allow the titles to build up? Please share your stories in the comments below.

I now buy ebooks only, except for cookbooks – a cookbook needs to be in the kitchen – it needs tomato paste stains, etc… That is part of the experience. I would much rather hold a physical copy of any book, but it doesn’t make sense. I move every couple of years and lugging a collection of books around is wasteful.

I went through a book accumulation cycle, but have recently started culling. My pitfall is architectural and photography books, but even those can become too overwhelming. So I have started checking those books out at the library first, and only buying the ones I absolutely love or aren’t available at the library.

I have read a book a day every day since college, some smoke, drink, kick dogs as habits, I read. Purging and or selling the books is My prefered method of disposal, but I have made them into insulation, torn up soaked in borax water retards, bugs and fire proofs a bit, as furniture, I glue them together, or even as fuel for heat or cooking, I know thats bad ,but freezing is freezing.

Bio Filo, I understand the need to heat and eat for sure! One year a young friend of mine was living in the country without a stick of wood to his name. We brought him books, clothes, sticks, boards–anything we could scrounge to keep him warm that winter! You do what you have to, you know?
