Katie’s feeling a bit under the weather today. It is rather chilly here so I’m not surprised that there’s something going around the schools. Her temp is up (99.1) so I gave her the option of taking a Tylenol or letting it run its course in hopes that it will kill the germies naturally; she chose to try the natural method.
With the chilly temps we’ve taken to laying around in the living room; I’m snuggled under some throws on the loveseat while Katie and Lily have claimed my bed. The animals can tell she feels bad; Lily refuses to leave her side and Angel (though currently beside me) has been watching her like a hawk, jumping up to check on her every time she moves.
We’ll watch the rest of Charlie Chaplain’s The Great Dictator this evening; we got about halfway through last night and had to quit because it was bedtime. To my surprise we are really enjoying his films even though most of them are silent.
During cold weather I dream of a little cottage with a fireplace or old wood stove. I could stoke that fire the way my dad did and banish the chill from my bones; electric heat just cannot compete even if you didn’t mind the bill. Fortunately we have lots of throws though our quilts are getting a bit worn. I guess I’ll have to stock up on blankets for the next winter season.
With temperatures projected to reach zero tonight I hope that you are all warm and safe. How do you pass the time during the chilly winter months? Please share your stories in the comments below.

although we live in the south, its chillier than usual here and I tend to spend my time mainly in the sunroom–which is not warm at night. Was thinking of getting a space heater for it today, but decided to forego going to town another day, & thus not spend any $$s. So glad my daughter made us a nice 2 sided fleece blanket for Christmas. I”m gonna cuddle up in the recliner with my blanket and some hot tea, and read one of your books.
Stay warm.
Hope Katy is better soon. Dogs are great for being nursemaids when you’re sick! Also I have four dogs and when its cold, piling together is good. That old saying ‘three dog night’ came about because of how many dogs to warm you at night! I think I have enough for the job
Best.
A woodstove is great heat, but terribly messy; I guess the mess is worth being warm because I keep a fire going. But here are some ways to stay warm that don’t cost a lot. Put cheap rice or scratch feed in a sock or pillowcase, or make the size case you want by sewing some scrap material together. Put this in the microwave to heat, you have to experiment with how long to leave it in or you’ll burn the material. Also, in spite of concerns about the current in electric blankets I wouldn’t want to spend a winter without one in my old house. An electric mattress pad is even better and I got one on freecycle. A hot bath is good too, you’ll stay warm for awhile after a good soak in very hot water.
We had a woodstove growing up; they are a lot of work but boy they could keep a house warm when they wanted… I wouldn’t want to depend on one for my heat but for a supplement on the really cold days they would be the bomb!
Hi Folks,
Just wanted to mention that after my own experiments with ordinary raw garlic bought for less than 2 bucks at the grocery store, and after reading a boat load of stuff written on the subject, I am still firmly convinced that the simple habit of consuming raw garlic cloves to fight off bacteria is an excellent and very affordable habit.
Not only is raw garlic very low cost, it has an amazing capacity to energize you when you feel like your energy is gone.
How do you consume raw garlic? Basicly by
taking one clove and peeling it and then chopping it into small bits that you can comfortably swallow with some water. The
authors whom I have ready about garlic recommend that special compounds are also released if we can actually chew that raw garlic a bit before swallowing it. Very cool. Get well soon.
